Summer? maybe...

So I've started my summer job as ARTery intern at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, WI.  A lot of days recently, though, you wouldn't guess it's June. -But it IS nice being by the big lake!

haha... Wisconsin weather - gotta love it!

It's sort of awesome....  the internship I mean, not the weather. Except when real messy kids come in. (and don't clean their messes up themselves, and run away, so I have to clean more.)  >.<

Anyway - I'm thinking of taking pictures of the ARTery and posting its progression on here (although, it's gotten to look a lot different now even from a week or two ago...)

Maybe this idea will still work. I'll try :)
Otherwise, if it doesn't... I'll just try and update often with musings of what's been going on lately.

And PS - If you go to the website (^the hyperlink's up there^) and look up the ARTery under the Learn/Explore tab, you'll find some info. on it, BUT last time I checked, it was a bit outdated. The ARTery is no longer an aviary, so it is no longer being inspired by Tom Uttech's painting.
However! It's now based on Memory (exhibition coming up - opening June 26 - HIDING PLACES: Memory in the Arts) and largely on Pat Graney's House of Mind, as well as a Deborah Ascheim piece that's already up in the gallery.

Heike Weber popped up on my Yahoo Newsfeed...

A view from above gives you a new perspective ...Heike Weber, an artist from Siegen, North-Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, expressed her artistry by drawing Utopia across the walls and on lacquer and acrylic floors, according to reports by several news sites.
The 49-year-old Weber uses several boxes of permanent colored felt markers to create her doodles and come up with amazing installations.
The combination of the colored felt markers being waved over white surfaces provides a very lively room environment.
Reports say that her art work spanned up to 600 square meter surface.

Here are some photos of Heike Weber‘s installations that include themes like Utopia, Yves, Kilim and Boden Los.

If you ever wanted to know what a two-minute time-lapse of a guy's flight from San Francisco to Paris with aurora borealis, aka the Northern Lights happening at some point during that flight, then we have just the video for you.
According to the filmmaker, "I shot a photo roughly every two miles between take-off in San Francisco and landing in Paris CDG to make this airplane time lapse. Shot with a 5d2, a time-lapse controller, and a 16mm - 35mm, mixed with some iPhone shots. The flight path from SF to Paris goes well over greenland and the arctic circle, where you can see 'northern' lights from all sides of the plane, which explains why I could shoot them facing South.

"The photos during take-off and landing are all computer models and totally rendered because I would never use an electronic device during times when the FAA prohibits them. I did get lucky and have a whole row to myself to setup the tripod and gear.

"Thanks to my neighbors for not minding an SLR click every 2 to 30 seconds for 11 hours, and thanks to the whole Air France flight crew for being insanely friendly and allowing me to shoot."

Weekly Artists, yet again...

So I seem to always gravitate to Juxtapoz to find the artists I like....
Maybe their "people" just have the same kind of taste I do. Sometimes.

This is a little creepy, but very cool. I like the end result.
The piece is a music video, or at least, we assume its the music video for the band Orelha Negra, and Alexandre "Vhils" Farto  was the director.

This one's neat, too... This artist uses live people in his installation-type pieces... This one involves a giant tilted mirror (that's the part you look at) and people "laying" on what ends up looking like a tall building. They can do somersaults down the side of the building and not fall off; it's like faux anti-gravity. He's got similar pieces on his website as well. A lot of his work deals with illusions.

Featured Artists of the Week...

Rachael Smith – a Brisbane based illustrator

They ducked and dived and raced and flew with grace through the pretty trees, down the alleyways of the city and up so high in the sky that only the clouds could see them to smile hello...

Favorite mediums: pencil, Indian inks and graphics tablet.
She uses both paper sketches as well as Photoshop and Illustrator, adding lots of layers of vintage patterns and textures.  She uses mid-century colour palettes and is inspired by whimsical tales and adventures she read as a child.
"My drawings all have their own unique story attached and I like to think these little one-page picture books are the perfect escape for anyone wanting to immerse themselves for a moment or two into a lovely world of make-believe. I believe very much in making only a happy imprint on this world and print with Hahnemuhle fine art archival paper, made from sustainable forestry practices and produced with green energy. My designs are also printed on fabric made from organic cotton, certified by Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS). This means Penelope and Pip creations are not just lovely to look at and use, but good for the earth as well."

Sketchbook Project

I think this is really cool -

http://arthousecoop.com/projects/sketchbookproject

Thousands of sketchbooks will be exhibited at galleries and museums as they make their way on tour across the country.
After the tour, all sketchbooks will enter into the permanent collection of The Brooklyn Art Library, where they will be barcoded and available for the public to view.
28838 artists from 94 countries around the world are participating. The tour starts February, 2011.
I wish I had known about this when sign-ups were still open! I'm for sure keeping my eyes peeled for next year's if there is one!!!

I found this Artist on Juxtapoz: (under Reader Art, she's an illustrator from the Netherlands)
here is a link to her sketchbook for the sketchbook project!

First Real Post

So, never having written a blog before, I find myself thinking a LOT about what I want to write in here. For now, I'll just stick to the assignments.

One of the artists I posted earlier is Julie Ganser. I found her work on White Columns and HAD to check it out. She got her MFA from UW Madison, and lives in Sun Prairie, WI. (Which I also think is pretty cool)

She uses found objects, mostly plastic (like recyclable plastic water bottles). I especially like her pieces that use bubble wrap. I think it's neat that she's taken something as mundane (and AWESOME.) as bubble wrap, and made it into something completely different.

In her statement, she talks about her multi-layered works as commentary on the role of transparency in society. She beautifully combines elements of nature with the recycled objects, to create installations and pieces that remind me of old paperweights - glassy and colorful, often containing flowers or just cool shapes...

If you'd like to read an article about Ms. Ganser, I encourage you to visit http://host.madison.com/entertainment/arts_and_theatre/visual/article_6ca1f5b0-a7b4-11de-babf-001cc4c002e0.html This article is about her exhibit at the James Watrous Gallery in Madison in 2009.
